As part of the Tri-cities area, the City of Hopewell, Virginia was founded to take advantage of its site overlooking the James and Appomattox Rivers in 1613 by Sir Thomas Dale. Nearly burned to the ground in the Hopewell Fire of 1915, the city prospered afterward and became known as the "Wonder City." As of July 1, 2014, the population of Hopewell was estimated to be 220,846.
